Google Maps My Location not supported on Samsung Blackjack SGH-i607

It seems that I can’t enjoy the Google Maps Mobile 2.0 my location feature. Bummer.

** Update 2008-01-31: [Google Maps My Location supported on Samsung Blackjack SGH-i607](

Solution attempt #1

Try to switch from 3G to Edge while running google maps This didn’t work for me, does it work for you? If so, what version of hardware/software do you have?

Solution attempt #2

Upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 on Samsung BlackJack. Trying this out now… And it works!) **

Solution possibility #3

I would probably go for an iPhone with 3G (if they ever come out) rather than upgrade to the blackjack II. or try out something different entirely. Why would I want to upgrade to a Blackjack II? so I could unlock the on board GPS of course.

  1. “it’s not GPS, but it comes pretty close (approximately 1000m close, on average).”

Uhhh wtf Google? GPS is orders of magnitude more accurate than that. That isn’t “pretty close”. Being off by a kilometer is frigging huge to me, but what do I know.

  2. That level of resolution is good enough for me. Often I’ll find myself in San Francisco or somewhere and I just want to quickly search for “sushi” near my current location… Not having to search for “Fell & Divisidero st, san francico, ca” first would be a time saver.

  3. so what can I do to make “My Location” work on my Samsung i607. The system configuration says myl:N/A. Is it possible to change that? I tried the appunlock from SurrealNetworks; that didn’t work.

  4. I believe that the My Location feature will not be available on the Blackjack because Windows Mobile doesn’t allow access to the hardware level information that holds the Cell ID data. I’ll add more comments if this changes.

  5. If your location is indicated within 1500 feet or so, your gps is not on. Rather, your position is triangulated from cell towers. when in google maps, go to the menu and select use gps - it may take awhile to find satellites, but it will indicate if it is looking.

  6. joejoe,

The original BlackJack doesn’t have GPS. :)

If you have a Blackjack II then sure, go turn on the GPS.
