Cingular, Samsung BlackJack, and Java MIDP Permissions

This weekend (2006-12-10) I bought a Samsung BlackJack. I took it home and tried to use Google’s Gmail Mobile application and it didn’t work. Lame. It will work when/if Google signs the Jar using Cingulars certs. Until then, I’m waiting for a registry hack or a good alternative JVM for Windows Mobile 5.0 so I can run my random Java goodness on this phone.

This is my biggest gripe so far and this is 100% Cingular’s fault. The Java Midlet Manager software includedhas been ‘customized’ by cingular. For some reason, they made it necessary to press OK everytime the java application wants to access the network. The option to allow connection for the whole session has been removed. This ‘feature’ renders some applications (like gmail mobile and google maps mobile) almost useless. . . . I guess either there will be other compatible Midlet Manager I can install (maybe an updated IBM version or Cingular finally comes to its senses) or there will be a hacked ROM for the Blackjack without this limitation. http://whynotus.wordpress.com/2006/11/22/new-phone-with-mini-review/

  1. Bummer. I’m a Cingular customer, and I’m ready to replace my phone. I thought the Blackjack looked good.

  2. I think it’s a great phone and would still recommend it. http://m.gmail.com works well enough for now and there is a rebate available on the data plan (if you need it). I’ll keep this post update when/if gmail puts out an updated gmail mobile app.

  3. […] When I last spoke about the Cingular BlackJack I only linked to people talking about solutions. This time I will link to a working solution. I haven’t tried this personally because random binaries on the intarwebnet frighten me, but people seem to be having luck with this “installer” package. […]
