Best Tamales Ever: Los Hernández in Union Gap, WA

The best tamales in Washington state are found in Union Gap, WA. Therefore, if you’re taking a trip to Yakima, WA like I did this weekend with my girlfriend; you must stop at Los Hernández. Described correctly as “the mecca for Mexican food aficionados marooned in the Northwest” by Sunset Magazine, these tamales are the best. We bought several dozen frozen pork and chicken tamales from the man himself, Felipe Hernández and wished that we were able to try the crazy vegetarian spicy asparagus/pepper jack cheese tamales they are currently taking pre-orders for… yes, pre-orders for tamales. Awesome.

  1. What’s a tamale? Nice to see you didn’t get shot this weekend.

  2. Wikipedia knows.

  3. I heard they aren’t reliable.

  4. I have personally eaten many of these tamales, both chicken and pork and they are DELICIOUS!! Los Hernandez has been in business for 15 years in the Yakima/Union Gap area.

I haven’t seen many people being shot at and I’ve lived here for 15 years. I hope you are visiting the good areas of the Pacific Northwest. Let me guess, you’re probably from the Seattle area…..am I right??

  5. Donna,

The “getting shot at” was a reference to the Capitol Hill shootings that happened a while back, not to the Yakima/Union Gap area. And of course I was visiting from Seattle.

  6. Hernandez Tamales are the best I have ever tasted. The tamales I have tasted at the several Mexican resturants I have been to, do not hold a candel to Hernandez Tamales. Their salsa they make adds even more flavor to them.

  7. I just purchase two dozen of these tamales and I am not happy with them, they are running there is no texture to them at all. I can’t even find the number to call and complain that I paid too much for these tamales.

  8. How did you heat them up? Did they get water logged in the cooler?

Best way to have the frozen tamales, are to fry them up in a pan. They get a little crispy on the outside. They are never complete without their salsa… imo. ;-)

  9. I agree with Mary Suazo, these tamales had no favor or texture to them. The owner was telling how good they were so I bought three dozen what a waste of money. I don’t think they make them on site.
